Using Wakelet to collect, organize, and share content from across the Internet


Wakelet is a free application that essentially is a curation website.  Working individually or collaboratively in a group, you create collections of images, documents, videos, sounds, and links and house them on one site. This tool can be used for research gathering (house what you have found before you start writing), team projects, demonstrations, and presentations.





Instructional Strategy: Lecture, Demonstration
Bloom's Level = 1, 2 without activity (remembering, understanding)
                         = 3, 4+ with activity (applying, analyzing, etc.)



  • Push content
  • Introduce topic/content, followed by a discussion to support the concepts covered
  • Presentations
  • Provides the instructor/students the opportunity to apply the concepts from the book and course to real-world experiences
  • Provide an opportunity to demonstration process, formula, or data gathering/research methodology
  • Students are able to lead the discussion, whether individually or as part of a group collaboration

Blackboard Collaborate - July 16, 2016 Update!


Blackboard Collaborate is a built-in web conferencing tool.  You can launch live video sessions, invite guests, and record and archive the entire session!

This is the second Blackboard Collaborate video - make sure you watch the first one, as this just contains the updates as of July 16, 2016.





This update contains built-in polling and a new User Interface.  BB Collaborate has a monthly update that contains either improved performance or enhanced capabilities. 

If you regularly use this tool you will want to check back for period update tutorials.

Easel.ly - infographics tool


Use Easel.ly, a free web-based infographics tool  which makes it easy to convey information with a strong visual approach.  This is a great way to show numbers and numerical data.




INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY: Compare/Contrast, Digital Storytelling, Infographics Bloom Level = 3+ (apply, analysis, etc.) 

- Clarify thinking
- Classify ideas
Explain meaning
- Graphic organizer
- Digital storytelling- Reflective judgment (Affective Learning)
- Highlight similarities and differences (which shows student has a deeper understanding that goes beyond surface level)
- Form generalizations based on categorized items

Easel.ly is a free web-based app (pro version for $3/month is also available) is a great infographic tool.  This tool makes for easy construction of digital storytelling assignments, digital bulletin boards and anything where a visual could be as powerful or more powerful than just text.

Hemingway App: The Proofreading Tool for Your Writing!


Use the Hemingway app tool to highlight common writing problems.

This free web-based app (there is a 2.0 version for $9.99) allows you to input sentences, paragraphs, even entire papers and get a quick highlight of common writing problems, in your work.  Each problem is color coded for easy visibility, and help is available so you can make adjustments.

Specific problems addressed:

  • Complex words
  • Extra-long sentences
  • Too many adverbs
  • Passive voice

        

This tools is easy to use, can be used on a tablet, laptop or a desktop.  It has its limitations, but has a short learning curve and a nice visual appearance that can quickly identify areas of weakness for the writer.  Has its limitations; not as powerful as NoRedInk, but can be helpful for those needed quick and easy writing help.

Instructors can assign students to use before submitting a draft!  Students can use this like an automated proofreader for some common writing mistakes.  Once this issues are color coded for you, you can make the appropriate changes prior to submission!

VoiceThread - web based voice over tool for images and videos.

Improve your presentations beyond just text.  Improve a PowerPoint presentation by adding voice and video, along with text components to it.  Add to an image or video with additional content to set it apart from strictly static graphics.  Access to third party sources (i.e. Khan Academy, Flickr, etc.) to use in your own presentations is as easy as a click away!

Formative: free app used for live audience response and formative assessment

Formative, is a free, live (real-time) formative assessment tool which can be great for formative assessment activities.


The instructor creates a digital classroom, and placed one or more assignment that can contain content, activities, interactions and formative assessments.  The students view the instructor's screen on their devices, and move through the assignment at their own pace.

The instructor can create multiple choice, true/false, short answer, and "show me" (demonstration) type questions; can add content and add documents which require the students to interact right on the document.  All this information is captured, auto graded or manual graded, depending on the instructor needs.

Using Pear Deck to engage your audience

Pear Deck allows you to build or use existing slide presentations to engage your students with the content.  You can embed interactions for formative assessment purposes, and reuse these presentations for that same course again, without starting over.

Students can access your completed Pear Deck on Smartphones, laptops or tablets and you can determine whether students can see the responses of everyone live, or let everyone respond and you can then share the results.

Microsoft Office Mix - PowerPoint add-in Part III (screencapture & screenrecording)

Microsoft Office Mix
This is an add-in to PowerPoint 2013 for Windows PCs (currently no release for Mac).

This tutorial is Part III (please watch at least Part I which is an Office Mix overview, if you haven't done so), which shows how to capture an image and add it to a slide, as well as screen recoding on that slide.

Other tutorials will be part of the Office Mix lesson, so if you are looking for ways to use other tools, please review those.

This is an add-in to PowerPoint 2013 for Windows PCs (currently no release for Mac).


There are going to be a few tutorials on this subject.  The Part I is an overview of the tool and how to get it loaded in the Microsoft Office 2013 Suite software package on your computer.

Other tutorials will be an in-depth look at various tools like recording audio over your PowerPoint presentation, screen capture of images, digital inking for annotations, built-in quiz and polling feature, sharing and storing presentation in Microsoft Office Mix Cloud.

Infographics with an iPad and Tellagami

Tellagami - a mobile device app for both iOS and Android which allows you to create quick 30 second infographics on either platform.  When done you can email the link to anyone or yourself for distributing in Blackboard or on a website.

There is a free version with some limited features and a paid version ($4.99) with a few more tools you may be interested in.
